Upcoming April Project!

Because April celebrates Earth Day, we decided to participate in an activity that will involve the outdoors. We want to teach the kids that taking care of Mother Earth is an act of service to everyone! Here are the details -

Saturday, April 20th
3:30 - 5:30 pm
Hidden Hollow Park
1229 E Wilmington Ave 2195 S
(Park in PetSmart parking lot)

"Join The Living Planet Aquarium and Global Youth Service Day to help clean up Utah’s lands. By helping clean up an area near you, you can prevent trash from harming animals and from reaching the ocean. At Hidden Hollow, volunteers will aid the aquarium in preserving this natural area and keep it beautiful for everyone to enjoy. The clean up will last about 2 hours and we encourage you to join us and bring your friends!"

Color-A-Smile March Project

For our March project we colored pictures for loved ones and the elderly. The kids drew beautiful pictures! We saved some of the pictures to give to the retirement home residents we will be performing for this summer. The kids also made "Service Books" to help them keep track of acts of service they perform throughout the month. At the beginning of each meeting, we ask the children to share an act of service they did the past month. Some of the answers from this month were: putting a band-aid on a sister's hand, helping their grandma make Sunday dinner, and cleaning up without being asked. We have such terrific kids as Service Stars!!

March Project

For our MARCH project, we were inspired by the non-profit organization, "Color A Smile." Their mission is to make people smile through drawings from children! http://www.colorasmile.org/ "Color A  Smile collects crayon drawings from school children. Every month we distribute these drawings to Nursing Homes, Meals on Wheels Programs, and Individuals all across the country. Our goal is to make people smile!"

We are meeting on Friday, March 22nd at 3pm at my home and having each child draw and color a few pictures to give to family members, neighbors, grandparents, and the elderly to make them SMILE!! Later in the year, the kids will be singing in a local Nursing Home and we will be giving some of the drawings at this event. This is a low-key project that even the littlest members of our club can participate in! No worries if you cannot make it to the meeting, but feel free to have your kids draw and color pictures on their own and give them to me for the nursing home members.

First Meeting!

Today was our first meeting! The kids voted and decided on the name "Service Stars." We had a great showing of 21 kids! The ages ranging from 11 to 2. Kim and I were so excited to have our dream come to fruition.

Kim talked to the kids about the definition of service, why is it important and how great it feels inside to give it. We played a game to get to know everyone then broke into smaller groups to brainstorm service ideas. There were some great responses! Some of them included,

- Neighborhood yardwork/shoveling/raking
- Collect money for the poor
- Help the elderly
- Doing dishes without being asked
- Visit the animal shelter
- Clean the park
- Tie quilts
- Give to the food shelter
- Make cookies for neighbors
- Write letters to the armed forces
- Make cards for someone sick

Way to go kids!! Can't wait to serve with you!
